What is the California Incentive Award? (Program Suspended) This is a one-time $20,000 award (paid in $5,000 annual installments and subject to availability in the annual State budget) for NBCTs who teach at least 50 percent of a full-time position in high priority schools for four consecutive years. “High priority” is defined as a school with an Academic Performance Index (API) statewide rank of 5 or lower. New schools must possess a qualifying API statewide rank in order to be considered for the 2008-09 school year application. Teaching roles may include a leadership role such as peer coach or other teacher support provider as long as the position does not require an administrative credential. Award payments are based on the “work completed” while the NBCT is employed at the local education agency. Click here for CDE webpage info:

What do National Board Certified Teachers in our district have to say about the process?
"The National Board process was the best professional development I have ever experienced. Most workshops I have attended focus on giving teachers new strategies. These can be useful, but most do not ask teachers to reflect on strengths and weaknesses of current practice. National Board forced me to take a hard look at my teaching and to question why I teach the way I teach. I was forced to ask myself honestly whether or not my methods were serving all my students. The net effect for me was a rekindling of my passion for teaching." ---Mike Herring, English Teacher, James Lick High School
"It has made me more conscious about HOW I am teaching, with regards to WHAT I am teaching. I am much more aware of what the student outcome should be-not just MY goal in getting through a certain amount of information or activity in a lesson. It has made me create much more measurable objectives (which in turn I now require from my SJSU Methods class students) in order to focus my teaching to student learning outcomes."
--Jane Narveson, Social Science, Independence High School
"I found the National Board process to be the most rigorous, introspective, illuminating and worthwhile professional development in which I have ever participated. National Boards demands one be analytical and reflective with respect to the entire teaching and learning process. Through National Boards, I developed more confidence knowledge as a teacher and gained multiple perspectives to many different facets of teaching. Finally, National Boards opened previously undiscovered windows of opportunity in my role as teacher-leader."
--Jamin Lynch, Foreign Language, Independence High School
"The NBC is a process. It is a journey of investing my precious time and money (thanks our state and our district for the grant to cover the expenses) in pursuing commitment to honor our profession by working to become ever better at this challenging and complex work. I accomplished 4 portfolios that document what I do in the classroom: analyzing student work, whole class discussion, and small group discussion; and my involvement as a teacher leader in our community. The important realizations I have experienced were reflecting on what I do to promote positive learning experiences among my students and learning valuable strategies to encourage students to meet the CA mathematics standards. Some of the factors that helped me accomplish this in a year are: good organizational skills; collaborating with my administrators and fellow teachers at Evergreen; joining the Stanford Support Group and the Santa Clara County of Education Support Group; planning way ahead of time on what to focus on, and always making the most out of the resources available for us as educators."
--Bernadette Salgarino, Math, Evergreen Valley High School
"The National Board Certification process was definitely the most challenging and engaging professional development course I have undertaken. Immediately after getting acquainted with the NBPTS policy statement- What Teachers Should Know and Be Able to Do and its five core propositions, I realized that I was constantly aware of a rationale for everything I did within and beyond my classroom. The best part of the process was that while I examined, analyzed and reflected upon successful teaching practices each day, I was also joyfully witnessing the positive results of their implementation in my classroom. Factors that contributed significantly towards my success were regular inputs from colleagues and the parent community, feedback from the students and above all, my personal time management. The Stanford Support Group in which I enrolled also provided valuable learning opportunities via one-on-one interactions and highly stimulating group discussions with educators from other districts. I am indebted to the District and State for supporting my efforts with a grant, and I hope to benefit my students and colleagues through my continuous growth as a teacher." -- Lalita Aisola, English, Evergreen Valley High School | |
